This holiday is observed & celebrated on November 29, every year. September is National Square Dance Month! National Square Dancing Day exists to celebrate the square dance form of folk dancing, and is a great excuse to get out and “Dosey Do”. This fun, healthy and simple form of dance with a long history definitely deserves a holiday all of its own, and it has one!
September is National Square Dance Month! National Square Day is observed & celebrated on November 29, every year. The traditional square dance known widely across the United States has its roots in 17th and 18th century Europe.
The purpose of Heritage Dancers is to promote awareness in the public of the historic and artistic value of square dancing, the folk dance which is truly American in origin. Further, to demonstrate through educational exhibitions and entertainment the unique place which square dancing holds in our national culture.
The Calico & Boots American Folk and Square Dance Performance Team has been showcasing traditional American dance in all its variety for over 60 years. This lively, exciting group has performed at community fairs, conventions, schools, senior centers, and private parties, and has represented the United States at national and international dance festivals. Calico & Boots is perhaps best known for its traditional Western squares with spectacular aerial figures. Performances may also include Appalachian traditional clogging, New England contras, quadrilles, and couple dances.

The Colorado Rocky Mountain Dancers (CRMD) was formed in 1999 to represent Lloyd Shaw's Cheyenne Mountain Dancers in a historical pageant to be presented at the 50th National Square Dance Convention in 2001. We prepared, but the pageant was cancelled. Instead we took our material and performed it in the exhibition hall at the National Square Dance Convention in Anaheim, CA. Since then, we have performed at seven National Square Dance Conventions, many other local, regional and national venues and in 2004 we represented the United States at 3 international festivals in Ukraine.

High Country Dancers, organized in 2001, dance a mixture of traditional and modern square dance figures with aerial lifts, all combined into four, six, and eight couple sets. We round out our program with quadrilles, contras, waltzes and Latin rhythms to make every show different. We have danced at every National Square Dance Convention since our organization as well as USA West Conventions. We also dance at many local events to keep us busy all year long. Don't miss our high energy, one-of-a-kind performances.

This group was started in 1982 to try to keep the traditional figures from being lost. Charlie Tuffield, the founder of the group, started calling in the 40’s and saw many of his favorite figures lost as new figures were called. The group started as a fun club dancing traditional, mainstream and plus (TMP), but was quickly asked to perform at various club dances. The group started doing exhibitions showing their mix of figures. The Classics have danced at National Square Dance Conventions, Colorado State Square Dance Conventions, club and special dances in Colorado as well as Kansas, Nebraska, Washington Oregon and Arizona. The Classics have also danced at nursing homes, senior centers, schools, the People’s Fair, Four Mile House and a variety of other venues. When Charlie could no longer call for the group, his daughter took over the Denver group and started a new group in Berthoud. The two groups now dance together and continue to keep Charlie’s favorite figures alive.
The act is exactly what it sounds like. Four seated couples maneuver vintage tractors into daisy chains and do-si-dos in front of a live audience. It would be hard to squeeze more nostalgia into a performance that combines made-in-America machines with our “National Folk Dance.”
