The Merry Mixers Square Dance Club is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization that supports and promotes the activities of square and round dancing. Both of these types of dancing are offered at our regular dances, which are held on the 2nd Saturday, September through May. The club also offers beginner square dance lessons twice a year, with sessions typically beginning in September and February.
The Merry Mixers Square Dance Club was founded in 1952, by Frank and Maxine Simpson. They taught between 8 and 12 couples how to square dance in their basement for years. Frank also became a caller and taught many other callers throughout his career. The club has gone through many changes in these past nearly 75 years! We will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of our club's founding with a special dance on May 8, 2027 - so now is the perfect time to learn to square dance so you can join us at our celebration. Our membership reflects a wide variety of ages, professions and personalities, which is what makes it FUN! We welcome dancers from ages 8 to 98! No partner required.
Square dancing is a world-wide activity, so no matter where you are, you can find a dance and meet new people. The calls are always said in English language. In our region alone (Mountains and Plains Square Dance Council), there are active clubs in northern Colorado - Greeley, Johnstown, Fort Collins, Wiggins, and also in Cheyenne (WY), Gering (NE), and Laramie (WY). It is possible to dance several times a week during regular square dance season (September through May). There are 20 to 30 active square dance clubs across Colorado; between 1,500 and 2,000 active clubs in the US; and an estimated 9,000 to 10,000 clubs in the world.
Square dancers across the world use the same standard calls. So that means if you learn to square dance in Greeley, Colorado, you can go to a square dance anywhere in the world and dance! Besides the United States, other countries with large numbers of square dance clubs include Japan, Germany, Canada, the UK, Sweden and Denmark.
Today, modern square dancing has evolved beyond what you might have learned in grade school. Callers use songs from every genre of music, from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to George Strait’s, “Amarillo By Morning” to Lindsey Stirling’s, “Electric Daisy Violin”, and much more! In addition, the dress code is much more casual now. Women are not required to wear full skirts with petticoats, although some still do because dressing up in a beautiful and creative square dance outfit can be part of the fun.
